Stamped Concrete vs. Regular Concrete: Which Is Right for Your Columbus Home?

By CBUS Concrete

One of the most common questions we get from Columbus homeowners is whether they should go with stamped or regular concrete. Both are excellent choices, but they serve different purposes and come at different price points.

Here's a straightforward comparison to help you decide.

What's the Difference?

Regular (brushed) concrete is the classic gray surface you see on most driveways and sidewalks. It gets its texture from a broom dragged across the surface while it's still wet, which creates a slip-resistant finish. It's clean, functional, and cost-effective.

Stamped concrete is the same material at its core, but after pouring, the surface is colored and pressed with large rubber mats (stamps) that imprint patterns into it. The result looks like natural stone, brick, slate, or even wood planks — at a fraction of the cost of those actual materials.

Cost Comparison

For a typical Columbus patio or driveway project:

  • Regular brushed concrete runs roughly $8–12 per square foot installed
  • Stamped concrete runs roughly $15–25 per square foot installed, depending on the pattern and color complexity

The price difference comes from the additional labor, materials (color hardener, release agent, sealant), and the skill required to stamp consistently before the concrete sets.

For a 400 sq ft patio, that's roughly $3,200–4,800 for regular vs. $6,000–10,000 for stamped.

Where Each One Makes Sense

Regular Concrete Works Great For:

  • Driveways — Clean, durable, and the most cost-effective option for the largest surface on your property
  • Sidewalks and walkways — Functional paths that don't need to be a design focal point
  • Garage floors and utility pads — Any surface where appearance is secondary to function
  • Tight budgets — When you want quality concrete without the premium price

Stamped Concrete Shines For:

  • Patios and outdoor living areas — Where the concrete is your "floor" and appearance matters
  • Pool decks — Decorative patterns add resort-style appeal (just make sure the finish has slip resistance)
  • Front walkways — A great way to boost curb appeal without the cost of natural stone
  • Accent areas — Borders, steps, or entryways where a pop of design makes an impact

Durability: How Do They Compare?

Both use the same concrete base, so structural durability is identical when installed properly. The difference is in surface maintenance:

Regular concrete needs almost nothing. Occasional pressure washing and sealing every 5+ years keeps it looking good.

Stamped concrete needs resealing every 2–3 years to maintain the color and protect the pattern from wear. If the sealer wears off, the color can fade and the surface may look dull. It's not difficult or expensive (about $0.50–1.00/sq ft), but it's a maintenance commitment you should know about upfront.

What About Ohio's Weather?

Both hold up well to Columbus winters when installed with air-entrained concrete. However, stamped concrete has one additional consideration: the textured surface can trap water in the pattern grooves, which freezes and expands. This is why proper sealing is especially important in Ohio.

At CBUS Concrete, we use commercial-grade sealants and ensure proper drainage slopes on all stamped work to minimize this risk.

Can You Mix Both?

Absolutely — and we recommend it for many projects. A popular approach is:

  • Regular concrete for the driveway (saves money on the largest surface)
  • Stamped concrete for the patio or walkway (adds design impact where people actually spend time)

This gives you the best of both worlds without blowing your budget.

Our Recommendation

If you're deciding between the two, think about how visible and how "livable" the surface is. Driveways get driven on — they don't need to be pretty. Patios get sat on — they benefit from a little character.

Either way, the most important factor isn't the finish. It's the installation quality underneath. A properly prepared base with the right concrete mix will outlast a fancy pattern on a shortcuts foundation every time.
